Depta tops 1:8 practice at ENS Bologna

fri_depta

Merlin Depta topped 1:8 practice at the Euro Nitro Series season opener in Italy this morning, the Serpent driver fastest from reigning champion Dario Balestri over 3-consecutive laps.  With the majority of drivers posting their fastest time in the first of the two controlled practices, an improvement in CP2 would see WRC’s Andrea Pirani complete the top 3 ahead of World Champion Simon Kurzbuch.  With the event marking the official debut of class newcomers Infinity it was Francesco Tironi who was fastest of the star studded team, posting the 6th fastest time ahead of team-mates Jesse Davis and Carmine Raiola.  Racing at L.Collari RC Raceway, track owner and No.1 Infinity recruit Lamberto Collari would manage only the 22nd fastest time.

fri_merlin

Although annoyed with himself for destroying a new bodyshell in the first practice which he had only prepared last night, Depta summed up his somewhat surprise topping of practice as ‘not bad’.  Having played around with rear body height in free practice yesterday he also switched between a wide and a narrow front track finding the wide made the car easier to handle. Over the two controlled practices he moved the rear shock position to the lowest hole which while not effecting the car’s pace did make it ‘easier to drive’.  Declaring the track as one of his favourites since his first visit in 2014, he will leave his Picco powered 977 unchanged for the first of the four qualifiers.

fri_carbalestri

‘With strange grip and strange tyres it is not easy but its a good start’, was Balestri’s view of being a 1/10th of a second off Depta’s pace.  The Capricorn lead driver was referring to the polishing the track surface underwent in January and to the race’s controlled Contact tyre.  Running the new RS version of the LAB-C08 which features new rear geometry, the Top Qualifier of this event last year said he has used practuice to adjust the balance of the car and he is happy with where it is at going into qualifying.

fri_pirani

Pirani was suprised by his Top 3 time saying, ‘Third! My feeling with the car was not very good’.  Finishing on the podium here 12-months ago, the Italian is running the 2016 version of the car he is responsible for designing.  Featuring a new front flex system he is ‘fighting low grip in the front end’ but added ‘I hope to make a better set-up and think I can go faster’.

fri_carkur

Kurzbuch said, ‘the first (practice) as really good and I was in the Top 3 but the second it rained a little and the track was not so good’.  Looking to get more steering on corner entry the Swiss ace feels there are ‘little improvements’ he can make to his Shepherd for Q1.  Declaring he ‘should be ready for quaifying’ he added ‘it will be interesting to see how everyone works in qualifying conditions’.

fri_abisset

Top French driver Anthony Abisset made it a promising morning for Serpent, their drivers having locked out the Top 3 in 1:10 pratice.  Setting the 5th fastest time, when asked if it was good morning for him he replied ‘yes for once’.  A former European B Champion, that title came here in 2014.  Making small changes to his also Picco powered 977, he said the biggest change came from changing bodyshell.  Switching between a Blitz and a Protoform body, he said the PF R18 made the car more stable out of the corner and he will run the car unchanged for Q1.

Completing the Top 6, Tironi said he is finding speed everytime he runs it as both the car and track improve. Describing the times as ‘really close’ the popular Italian added ‘I think we are competitive’.  Looking to the opening qualifier after ‘a little problem’ with his engine he will fit a new one adding, ‘the aim is to make a clean run with a Top 5 or better the target’.

Serpent opens ENS#3 with strong 1:10 practice

fri_alessio

Serpent have opened the 2016 Euro Nitro Series season with a strong show of force as their drivers locked out the Top 3 in controlled practice in Bologna, Italy, this morning.  With drivers getting two rounds of controlled practice which will determine the heat seeding, it was last year’s season finale winner Alessio Mazzeo who set the pace around the high speed L.Collari RC Raceway.  Behind the Italian it was Mark Green, just 0.049 of a second off over 3-laps, with Serpent’s 2015 title contender Dominic Greiner on a further 0.075 adrift.  Best of the rest would be Erik Dankel, the 2014 ENS Champion making a good start to his Mugen debut with only 0.029 his deficit to Greiner.

fri_mazzeo2

With Serpent’s factory drivers running first samples of a soon to be released new internal transmission for the Natrix 748, Mazzeo declared, ‘we are happy’.  Setting his fastest time in the first of the two practices, he said having tried a different set-up in CP2, he will revert back to his previous set-up for the first of qualifiers.  With rain forecast for tomorrow, organisers have brought forward qualifying with all 4 rounds now scheduled to run today.  Also new on his Gimar Speed 2016 powered 748 is a Novarossi clutch, the unit the first centax system to be released by the Italian engine manufacturer.

fri_cargreen

‘Very good’ was Green’s reaction to the practice.  Describing his car as ‘really consistent’, the British driver added that the new transmission ‘allows the car to run more free’ resulting in ‘smooth acceleration’.  Also running big bore shocks on his car he said having left his car unchanged over the two practices he would continue with it that way for Q1, the car’s designer Michael Salven joking on that because he doesn’t need to change anything and ‘actually he is bored’.  Having made the switch to XRD engines, a strong engine key to track’s fast layout, he declared ‘my new engines are fantastic’.

fri_dominic

A drivers who is known for determination to be P1, Greiner described his P3 in practice as ‘ok’.  Describing the new transmission as ‘a lot better’, the German said his car is actually ‘too easy to drive’ and he is ‘looking for more steering’.  Another driver to switch engines over the winter going in the opposite direction to team-mate Green by joining Novarossi, he said his new engines have been running ‘very good’.

fri_dankel

‘Good so far’ was Dankel’s summary of practice.  Having endured a torrid start to his title defence in Bologna last year failing to make the final, he said it was ‘good to make first race without problems’.  In the second practice, he did have a problem with his car going straight on and across the grass – a loose battery connector suspected as causing the glitch.  Working very closely with the car’s designer Robert PIetsch he said ‘Robert is helping a lot and I really appreciate that’.  Making a change to his Orcan powered MTX-6 for CP2 when he ran a softer rear anti roll bar, as it didn’t improve the car he will revert to a set-up he ran in free practice yesterday.

fri_bruno

A driver who showed strong at the final round in Fiorano last year, Spanish KM driver Eduardo Escandon looks to have picked up where he left off by laying down the 5th fastest time. Behind him Bruno Coelho completed the Top 6.  Winner here in Bologna last year, the Xray driver set his time in the second of the practice runs having topped the times on the slower track.  The Portuguese ace said his ‘car was very good in the last run but the track was slower.  We improved the car a lot so we are on a good way’.  Looking for more steering, admitting ‘everyone has the same problem’, he said ‘we have some more things to run through but it looks good for qualifying’.  Coelho’s World Champion team-mate Alexander Hagberg would post the 8th fastest time.

fri_wischnewski

Heading Team Shepherd’s 1:10 campaign with the 7th fastest time, Dirk Wischnewski hinted that this weekend was  about damage limitation in terms of championship points.  Describing practice as ‘so so’, the German continued ‘we improved compared to yesterday when we struggled a lot’.  Suffering from understeer, he conceded that ‘normally (these) conditions are not on my side’ and ‘I hope for good run over the 4-minutes’, the ENS running 4-minutes qualifier.

fri_cargros

Posting the 9th fastest time ahead of the similar car of Britain’s Kyle Branson,  reigning champion Jilles Groskamp said ‘its not so bad, it (his pace) is very close to the other guys’.  Having joined the Infinity team over the winter, the former HB driver said his focus so far this weekend has been on his 1:8 programme.  With Infinity not yet having a 1:10 car, the Dutch ace is running a Capricorn adding he has ‘not put much effort into 1:10 yet’.  Doing one race with the car in Singapore, where he said track conditions where very different, he said he would like to dial out some understeer and will go through the set-up a bit more now that is 1:8 is running well.

Track Focus – L.Collari RC Raceway

fri_trackfish

Track Name – L.Collari RC Raceway
Owner – Lamberto Collari
Country – Italy
Location – Bologna
Direction – Anti-clockwise
Surface – Asphalt
Previous ENS races hosted – 1 (2015)

Making its first Euro Nitro Series calendar appearance last year when it hosted the season opener, Italy’s first ever permanent track is again the venue for the start of the 2016 ENS.  Built in 1978, the track is responsible for starting the career of one of the RC racing all time great Lamberto Collari.  Only 6-years old when the track then called Pista Futura was built, it is here where the 9-time 1:8 Onroad World Champion mastered his legendary driving skills and things turned full circle in 2013 when Collari, together with Luca Rauli, took ownership of the track which has aptly been renamed L.Collari RC Raceway.

Retaining its original fast 308 metre long layout over its 38-year existence, one change to the track since last year’s ENS visit is a cleaning of the track surface in January.  Last resurfaced 8-years ago, in preparation for the 1:5 European Championships it will host in July the track was polished with a steel ball cutting agent that clears away the tyre build up and makes the track surface more abrasive providing better traction for the large rubber tyres the class uses.  Unfortunately for the ENS which uses foam tyres, Contact the official tyre suppliers for the opening round of ENS Season #3,  the work has resulted in lower traction.  Reigning 1:10 Champion Jilles Groskamp said the lower traction has made for slower lap times but also means more tyre wear as the cars are sliding around more, especially in the 1:8 division.  On the track layout, the new factory Infinity driver said ‘it’s wide open’ adding ‘while you always need a good engine it is especially important here’.  On double duty this weekend, racing Maxima powered cars in both 1:8 and 1:10, he said in 1:10 ‘it is difficult to find good steering as a result of the high speed’.

New ENS season brings new competition

ENS_SeasonOpener770px

The wait for the highly anticipated start to the third season of the Euro Nitro Series is over as the world’s best onroad drivers travel to Bologna, Italy, this weekend for the first of four stops on the 2016 calendar.  New to the championship last season when it also hosted the opening round, the L.Collari RC Raceway circuit owned by RC legend Lamberto Collari has attracted over 150 entries with the biggest news of the new season being the arrival of the new Infinity team.  Making their ENS debut with a small presence at the 2015 season finale in Fiorano, 1:8’s newest manufacturer has over the winter recruited an impressive driver line-up in it’s quest to win the prestigious ENS title.

In 1:8 it’s Capricorn who are the reigning champions with Dario Balestri and the successful Italian partnership remains upchanged for 2016. One interesting addition to Capricorn’s line-up is multiple World Championship Finalist Robin D’Hondt.  Infinity’s intentions are clear with the Creation Model owned brand having signed up none other than 9-time World Champion Collari to lead a star studded team.  Although they have yet to produce their own 1:10 car, another top signing is reigning ENS Champion Jilles Groskamp who is also joined by his race race winning HB team-mate of last season Teemu Leino. Racing in both classes this weekend, Groskamp will use a Capricorn in 1:10 while Leino will focus only on 1:8.

As the 2015 1:8 Champions, Team Shepherd will be relishing the prospects of a competitive campaign. Winners of the inaugural ENS title with Simon Kurzbuch and on the back of a great win at the season final back in October, the Swiss driver went on to be the World Champion in Brazil.  The German manufacturer will also be looking for a strong 1:8 performance from European Champiom Oliver Mack.  In 1:10 Dirk Wischnewski will again lead the Shepherd challenge.

Winners in Bologna last year with Collari, then running as a privateer,  Mugen will this year look to former World Champion Robert Pietsch.  By his own standards Pietsch didn’t have a great 2015 season and will be looking to make amends for that.  Alberto Picco, the man responsible for Pietsch’s engine sponsorship, will again be another of the leading Mugen contenders.  In 1:10, having lacked strong representation in the class last year, Mugen have boosted their efforts with the signing of 2014 Champion Eric Dankel. The German returns after a break from racing following a difficult & curtailed campaign last year.

While Xray have a new 1:8 car which they hope will bring them improved success in the sport premiere class, in 1:10 they can be expected to again be title contenders.  A World Championship year for 1:10 nitro touring, they are the reigning World Champions with Alexander Hagberg and everyone knows the threat that is Bruno Coelho.

In 1:10, expect Serpent to be right at the sharp end thanks to the sometimes controversial but very fast Dominic Greiner.  On outright speed the German is unquestionably one of the touring car classes’ fastest drivers but luck tends to elude him.  Dominating the season finale, he was robbed of a potential title victory by an engine failure.  That win would go to his team-mate Alessio Mazzeo, who with Greiner makes Serpent a formidable 1:10 title challenger. In 1:8, Merlin Depta showed strong for Serpent last year and should be one to watch.

Elsewhere ARC will be hoping to build on a strong debut season with Lars Hoppe a potential winner. Former ENS race winner John Ermen and Silvio Hachler will be aiming to be in the mix also with the R8. Having started 2015 with just one team driver but adding Michele Ramagnoli, WRC have high hopes of improving on their 4th position in last year’s overall championship with Andrea Pirani.  Unfortunately Daniele Ielasi has opted to sit out the opening round.

Supported by Shepherd, Xray, Serpent and now Infinity, the Euro Nitro Series continues its single tyre supplier per race format with Contact providing drivers with traction for Round 1.  Ettlingen in Germany is the venue for Round 2 when Enneti makes  it return to the championship with Hotrace the supplier for Round 3 in Aigen, Austria. Having supplied the tyres for the season opener the past two season’s Matrix will now take care of drivers needs for the final round at Fiorano, Italy.

Euro Nitro Series releases 2016 calendar

fri_lambertotrack

The Euro Nitro Series has released details of its 2016 calendar with the third season of the hugely successful nitro onroad championship again set to run over four rounds. With almost 300 drivers from around the world registering championship points over the 2015 season, a growth of over 10% on its inaugural running in 2014, the ENS will take competitors to Italy, Austria and Germany.

Kicking off on April 22-24, the opening round will be hosted by legend of the sport & the ENS’ most winning driver Lamberto Collari.  Opened in 1978, L.Collari RC Raceway was the first ever permanent track to be built in Italy, a country widely recognised as the spiritual home of onroad racing. Making its first appearance on the calendar in 2015, it was at the Bologna track that Dario Balestri would score the first championship point of his successful 1:8 title winning season when he took the overall TQ.

After Bologna, the championship travels to Germany. A very popular addition to the 2015 calendar, Ettlingen moves to an earlier slot hosting Round 2 over the weekend of June 17-19.  With the 1:10 200mm World Chamionships taking place in August, the championship takes a two month break before resuming on September 2-4 in Austria.  The Aigen track witnessed one of the closest races in the ENS’ 8-race history with Teemu Leino taking his first win ahead of champion elect Jilles Groskamp and Dominic Greiner all three covered by just 6-seconds after 45-minutes of racing.

Attracting a record 156 entries when it hosted the 2015 season finale, the Mini Autodromo Jody Scheckter in Fiorano, Italy, will again be the concluding round of the championship. Round 4 will run on October 21-13. Running a different brand of handout tyre for each round, an element of the ENS which has contributed to its success, details of the 2016 tyre partners will be announced early in the new year.

2016 Euro Nitro Series Calendar (Season #3)
Round 1 – Bologna, Italy (22–24 April)
Round 2 – Ettlingen, Germany (17–19 June)
Round 3 – Aigen, Austria (02–04 September)
Round 4 – Fiorano, Italy (21–23 October)

Kurzbuch wins but Balestri claims ENS title

sun_opening

Simon Kurzbuch won the fourth & final round of the Euro Nitro Series, but second behind the Shepherd driver in Italy was enough for Capricorn’s Dario Balestri to deny the season’s only double winner from retaining the title he won last year at the Mini Autodromo Jody Scheckter track. Starting second behind Top Qualifier Balestri, Kurzbuch would drive the ‘near perfect race’ coming out on top of a thrilling mid race battle between the two world class 1:8 drivers.  Knowing even if Kurzbuch took the win Balestri would see out the 45-minute final in a controlled fashion finishing 5-seconds behind his Main title rival while the other title contender Robert Pietsch finished a distant 5th after an early incident with last year’s race winner Lamberto Collari.  Starting from 12th on the grid having bumped up from the B-Main Alberto Picco would completed the race podium in Fiorano.

sun_balkurtir

‘That was a very enjoyable race’ was Balestri’s reaction to a race that saw the pair rub body work and make contact twice.  He continued ‘It was very competitive and I am happy to have battled like this with Simon, he is a very good driver’.  Having shot into title contention with his first ENS win at the previous round in Germany and then making Kurzbuch’s quest to retain the title even harder by securing the bonus championship point for the TQ, he said his only problem in the final was tyres.  The former Eurpean Champion said ‘we made something wrong with the set-up for the tyres’ holding up his worn out front tyres.  He said ‘I am ok with arriving 2nd and I’m happy for Simon but this weekend is a huge boost for the World Championships as we should we have a really good package in Capricorn and my Tesla engines’.

sun_simon

Kurzbuch said apart from mistake early on it was a perfect race for him.  Describing his Velox V8 and Novarossi engine as perfect he said the key moment of the race was his quick tyre stop which gave him ‘a few seconds on Balestri’.  Sharing his Italian rivals views that it was it was ‘a really nice battle’ between them he said it was particularly ‘nice to win in Italy against drivers like Dario’.  The only multiple race winner of the second season of the ENS from either classes, he said he was OK with 2nd in the championship highlighting his ‘two bad results’.  Describing the event as the perfect warm-up before travelling to Brazil for the World Championships he said ‘the stuff is ready and I am really happy with the improvements we have made with the Mito 9C engine’.

sun_piccofin

Claiming his first ENS podium finish Picco said ‘I couldn’t have expected more when I look at how the weekend started’.  Keeping the same set-up as he used to bump up from the B-Final, he said his Mugen again worked well but added he was ‘delayed by starting last on the grid’.  Not an incident free race for the Picco engine boss, the Italian said he made a mistake during one of his pit stops in which he crashed into Collari, the Infinity driver suffering a flame out as a result. The crash would also brake a rear tyre on Picco’s car leaving him to run 10-minutes with it before his scheduled tyre stop.  He would again find himself crashing with Collari, this time a problem with the 9-time World Champion’s car causing it to slow out of a corner and on full throttle Picco couldn’t avoid him.  Damaging the body and front bumper he said he would lose some steering but he was able to drive around it, adding considering everything finishing on the podium was a ‘very good result’.

sun_ielasifuel

Finishing fourth having been in the mix for a podium finish, Daniele Ielasi described his race as ‘super’.  Having to fuel every four minutes he said with 2 more stops than his rivals he was very happy that he could still run at the front, the gap to Picco at the end only 3.9-seconds.  Braking his ‘race car’ in half in practice and having to race a standard version of the GTX, he said ‘I am super happy with the performance and let the others know I am here’ which he said was a huge physiological boost for the Worlds.

sun_robert

Debuting Mugen’s new MRX-6, Pietsch said he was ‘very happy’ with the new car adding that the event and racing against such a high level competition was hugely beneficial, if slightly risky.  With the new car having different handling characteristics to the MRX-5, he said the set-ups it requires are also different but given that he had no proper testing prior to the ENS finale it was a positive first race.  The former World Champion said he had a lot of understeer with his first set of tyres and he just tried to keep 3rd having got by Ielasi early on.  Battling with Collari, contact would see Pietsch end up on his roof, the German saying with the lost time his ‘race was done’.  With the incident damaging a tyre he said the car was then horrible until the stop.  Much happier with the second set of tyres, he said he was able to set good lap times and run with Picco.
